Word out of Philly has the Phillies interested in Washington free agent Alfonso Soriano. The suggested asking price is around the seven-year, $119-million package Carlos Beltran signed with the Mets. He reportedly rejected a $70 million offer from the Nationals.
Soriano hit 46 homers with 41 stolen bases, but for all those homers drove in only 95 runs. He struck out 160 times which is inexcusable. That’s giving away far too many at-bats for that price.
He has tremendous power potential, but has far too many holes in his game for that kind of money. I don’t really care that he bit the bullet and played left field even though he wanted to play second. He’s too wrapped up in his numbers, he’s not a five-tool player, and there are other places to spend the money.
Soriano plus Ryan Howard is scary, but I still say they should pass.
