One of the things the Mets are thinking about is whether they should go after Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. I don’t think that’s a good idea on several levels:
* Can you say Hideki Irabu? I know Hideo Nomo had a couple of good years, but he also had that funky delivery. The hitters eventually solved him. Me? I keep thinking about Irabu when I think of Japanese pitchers.
* The Mets’ record with Japanese players, pitchers and hitters, hasn’t been good.
* Then there is the bidding process. The Mets might have to pony up $20 million just for the rights to talk with him. Then figure maybe another $20-million plus on the contract. That’s $40 million — and that’s a rough estimate — for a pitcher with no track record vs. major league hitters. I think the Mets should spend their money elsewhere. Forty million can plug some holes.
