Just got off the phone with GM Omar Minaya, and here’s what’s going on with Tom Glavine.
The lefty remains a priority, but things aren’t as advanceed as has been reported.
Minaya said Glavine is still hashing things out with his family, but that the team has been in touch with the agent. Just because Glavine hasn’t had a sit-down with Jeff Wilpon doesn’t mean things aren’t happening.
A key date in Nov. 10, when Glavine has to announce whether he’ll pick up the $7.5 million player option. The team has a Nov. 20 deadline of exercising a $14-million clup option. Glavine isn’t going to take $7.5 million when he knows 10 days later he’ll get another $6.5 million.
Right now, the agent and the Mets are working on a compromise figure.
If Glavine doesn’t pick up the option by Nov. 10, look for him to protect himself by declaring for free agency. The filing deadline is the next day.
Things look promising, but it’s not a done deal, yet.
