Mets GM Omar Minaya spoke with us this afternoon in a conference call about several issues.
Here’s what’s going on:
- Re-signing Tom Glavine remains a priority.
- Minaya also said the club is interested in bringing back Orlando Hernandez and Chad Bradford. Darren Oliver didn’t come up in the conversation. Minaya said he wants to address his own free agents first, and that would include Jose Valentin.
- Negotiations with manager Willie Randolph about a contract extension haven’t started. Minaya has talked to Randolph, but not to the agent.
- Minaya danced big time on the Guillermo Mota issue. He said Mota is somebody they wanted, but that they would have to re-evalutate. Mota made $3 million last year, so don’t forget playing it cool is a way to keep the price low.
- Minaya wouldn’t identify any of the already declared free-agents, among the Barry Zito, Alfonso Soriano and Jason Schmidt. They can’t negotiate with any free agent other than their own until 15 days after the World Series, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make contact. You’d better believe if there’s interest Minaya has expressed it with the agents.
- Rookie Mike Pelfrey has been shut down in the Arizona Fall League. Minaya mentioned aches and pains and not wanting to wear down the pitcher. No injury, he said. The same with Phil Humber.

damn pelfrey, damn him to hell!!!!! aches and pains my @ss ;-]
:-(
Mota: if they give him another 3Mil he better say thank you sir. i will be a good boy I promise.
I trust Minaya, But I wonder whats up with Randolph? he probably wants money commenserate with what he achieved and i dont blame him.
Glavine, if its the wife she should get smacked in the face oh wait sorry that was chipper jones. never mind. I am sure Glavine will do what is right for him and the family. To me family comes first and if he hangs up cause of family well i have to respect that .. because i would..
Like i said I want to see a good young pitcher or 2 and a captain. everything else I will trust to randolph and minaya. If Minaya lets randolph slip away I will have to rethink Omar.
Thanx for keeping us informed John!
Hi John –
I heard that Glavine will hang them up after he reaches 300 wins which is only 10 more – so why is he over-reaching with that contract request?
Mota? who would want him now anyway?
I don’t care how old El Duque is, I would want him on the team, but otherwise, no pitchers over 28 or who want ridiculous $$$$$/contracts.
Is there room on this team for both Lastings Milledge and Alphonso Soriano?
I miss baseball already…
Steve C. ...
Mota: No way he gets 3 mill this time. Only an idiot would pay it. Especially since he’s out a third of the season already.
Willie: He’ll get his money. I don’t think they are playing games with him.
Glavine: He’s going to wait this out. With the way the options are scheduled, he stands to lose some serious bucks if he jumps too soon.
To Joan …
He’s not over reaching. He’s playing this the right way. If he picks up his option, Nov. 10, he makes $7.5 million. Not bad. If he waits, he could make more. There’s no hurry.
As far as Milledge and Soriano, there’s no need to have both. Personally, I don’t want either. I’d use the money Soriano is asking for on pitching. You could get a couple of players for that. You might be able to re-sign your entire bullpen plus Hernandez for that.
And, I’d trade Milledge first chance I’d get.
