Just because Barry Zito filed for free agency this afternoon doesn’t mean he’ll be in town tomorrow looking at apartments. Zito has been linked to both New York teams, and the Mets made a run at him at the trade deadline, backing off when the Athletics insisted on outfield prospect Lastings Milledge.
Zito is 28 and made $7.9 million last season. He’s represented by Scott Boras, so he won’t come cheap. One of the reasons the Mets, or whoever signs him will pay, is he’s started at least 34 games every year since 2001. Durability costs. Durability plus performance costs more.

I don’t think a few ducats will scare the Mets.
Do we have a choice?
Everyone knows we need pitching. We know it they know it.
As you say he ain’t old which is a good thing. It also means we have some glue and a bridge. All the young guns won’t pan out so you can’t rely on the fab 3 all making good next year.
We know about one ( Maine ). Who knows about the others? Although I do like Banister. He got hurt which is a concern. He doesn’t have great stuff but was effective while he was pitching.

To Dave …
Omar raves about the quantity of choices, but you nailed it – they all won’t pan out. And, who is to say Glavine will be as effective next year? Afterall, he’s a year older. They were lucky to hold it together this year with what happened to their rotation. They need to add, and just Zito won’t be enough.
unfortunately yes.
also with mota being out early it is just one more thing.
