Here’s a surprise: Gary Sheffield is unhappy.
All those years I covered the Yankees there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t moan about. Not the least of which was his contract. He moaned about them not picking up his contract option. Now that they said they will, he doesn’t want it. Picking up the option could make it easier to trade him, but not if he’s going to pout and threaten to leave after a year.
The Mets and Yankees aren’t going to do Sheffield trade business, so forget about that now. Not a player of that magnitude. The Yankees will want young pitching the Mets don’t want to give up.
If Sheffield gets his way and becomes a free-agent, he’s still not a good fit for the Mets, whose money would be better spent on pitching. Despite Willie Randolph’s familiarity with him, the Mets don’t need that headache.
