For the Mets to win, several things have to happen tonight. Here’s the most significant keys:
1. Get to Jeff Suppan early: Roughly 70 percent of the time the Mets score first they usually go on to win. In most series there’s an unknown that steps up big. Suppan could be that guy. He pitched lights out in Game 3. For the Mets, that means Jose Reyes.
2. A strong start by Oliver Perez: He’s going on short rest, so expect the Cardinals to run up his pitch count. He’ll give up some hits, but the thing for him is to not walk anybody.
3. Hello, David Wright: He’s shown glimpses, but the Mets need a breakout game from their third baseman.
4. A strong bullpen: The Mets won’t let Perez work himself out of too many jams. With a short leash, the bullpen will be used early and often.
