I got a post asking to check the player’s emotional temperature. They are still loose enough, but there IS a difference in their demeanor.
It’s easy to be jubilant in July with a double-digit lead. There is no margin for error any more, and with their pitching the way it is, I believe in the back of the hitters’ minds they believe they have to make up for it. That’s part of it. Here is their rotation for this series: Tom Glavine, John Maine, Steve Trachsel and Oliver Perez. That’s not a classic rotation, and outside of Glavine, there has to be some apprehension.
Another part of what you see in the Mets’ attitude is that the Cardinals are pretty good.
There has been a lot of talk about the need to wait out Jeff Weaver tonight and make him work the way they did Anthony Reyes the other night. That’s a realization of what they need to do, which is a good sign. It was their offensive approach this season and they might have gotten away from it a little bit in the playoffs, where the pitching is always better.
