It has long been speculated Alfonso Soriano might find his way back to New York, possibly with the Mets. A possible first step was taken today with Soriano rejected a $70-million package from Washington.
When the Mets closed the season in Washington, Soriano said he was interested in returning to the Nationals. He also said he would keep his options open and said he enjoyed New York.
No doubt you’ll hear his name this winter.

I will give Soriano credit for a terrific year. He’s a pretty serious offensive ballplayer. That said, he’s no second baseman, and I’d groan if I had to watch him butchering balls in the infield for the next five years.
He’s also going to command big, big money, which ties the hands (and budget) of whichever team signs him. And given his reputation as something of a malcontent, not sure I wanna tie up that kinda scratch for him long-term.
Here’s hoping that Omar gets involved just enough to up the price for whoever does sign him. He likes NY, huh? Hmmm. (-:
Now, let’s go out there and jump on Weaver early.

Soriano will cost a bundle, no question. They have the money, but how hard they will pursue him is difficult to say.
With Cliff Floyd not expected back and Lastings Milledge not making a lasting impression, I’d be surprised if they don’t make a run at him.

I have such a soft spot for Cliffie. And i still think he’s a terrific hitter when he’s healthy.
Given his expected offseason surgery, I’d love to see the Mets bring him back on the cheap for next season, with the idea that he’s a 4th outfielder or platoon guy.
He can hit, he’s smart, he’s passionate, he’s well-liked, he seems to really like it here, and he’s not a bad outfielder when he isn’t hurt. I can’t imagine, coming off surgery, that ther will be a lot of competition for his services.
Great game tonight.
ajsmith,
I agree, if he would come back for a modest amount that would be good. I don’t expect that to happen tho..
As for Soriano. Great offensive talent, but I wouldn’t go after him.
This team is built on offense and D. By offense I mean spead and power. Soriano doesn’t do D which means you weaken the whole team. Is that what we want?
There must be other options for the OF as well as 2B.
