The Mets finally know where Pedro Martinez will fit into their postseason plans _ he won’t. An MRI today showed a muscle tendon tear in his left calf that will have him out for the playoffs.
“The bottom line is he’s out,’’ GM Omar Minaya said.
Prior to tonight’s game with Atlanta, Willie Randolph said Orlando Hernandez would start Game 1 and Tom Glavine Game 2, and that Game 3 was still up in the air and Martinez was a possibility.
It’s now down to Steve Trachsel or John Maine.

What a friggin’ soap opera this has been!
Wonderful.
Hi John – This is my question – will Pedro be in the clubhouse/dugout during the playoffs?
Typical..
Just goes to show everyone.. Nolan Ryan was an aberration. after 40 a pitcher should just stop. Tom Terrific did.. he came back pitched a few and realized ya know.. i aint that Terrific anymore and why tarnish the name.. let em remember Tom T. Not Tom Tom the Piper’s son…
We won yay… it was a good game relative to the previous 4. ;-]

b4 is was trachsel or maine. so now it is both. the pitchers we have will burn out on a 3 man rotation. they need a 5 day rotation however that pans out.
so now we shall c. can maine do it in the postseason or will the pressure get him?

John,
Just to beat this to death on what pedro did for the mets this year when healthy.
G GS W L ERA WHIP BAA April 5 5 5 0 2.94 0.89 .165
May 6 6 0 1 2.14 0.74 .169
Not bad for a has been.

I have read through the papers this morning and cannot believe what I am reading about this team.
Does anybody really believe that the other teams that are still even trying to find out if they’ll even make the playoffs can beat the Mets?
This is ridiculous. The national league teams that are left are just a joke. Houston has pitching but no offense and may not even make the playoffs if the Cardinals, a team that is falling apart manage to win one of their remaining games and Houston loses one. The Dodgers? San Diego? Phillies? Which one is going to beat the Mets now when they couldn’t before and the Mets didn’t have Pedro then either.
Everybody take a breath!!! For relief read Graziano’s column on North Jersey.

Good Point, but just remember the miracle mets and the amazing mets .. were never thought to win it either and they did..
This year we have an excellent team and as long as they play their A game we will win. otherwse if they play the B ball that they played these last 4 games .. we lose..
CLM,
In a previous posting I predicted that the Mets will win the NL. I think they have at least as good a shot as anyone.
However, the Mets won their division because of the offense and the D, not pitching.
I think they can get out of the NL the question is can they beat the team from the AL.
In the past month the Mets have been hammered by inferior teams. Does that give you the warm fuzzies?
I am not thinking of winning the NL, I am thinking of winning it all. Omar has given me hope. He raised the bar.

A couple of thoughts on Pedro, beginning with the most important: This is not the guy who won all those Cy Young Awards.
When healthy, he was 5-0. He has gone 4-8 since. Twice he was on the DL for at least a month. The Mets can win without him. As of right now, they have a better chance to win with Steve Trachsel and John Maine. If either of those two should lose, the thinking shouldn’t be that they would have won with Martinez. Because, the fact is they haven’t done much winning with him.
Another fact, there’s nobody in the NL right now, outside of maybe Houston’s rotation that is scary. Even without Martinez, they have as good a chance as any in a five-game series.
Things will get harder in a longer series.
