Pedro Martinez was solid through four innings, but threw 30 pitches in the fifth. Willie Randolph seems inclined to keep Martinez as the Game 1 even if throws five innings in his last start next week at Atlanta. Five innings isn’t much. It’s what you’d expect from a back-end starter.
If Pedro is Pedro for five, the hope is the Mets will have given him a lead the bullpen can hold. I’m uncomfortable with that, even with Martinez’s big-game rep. But, if he was the same pitcher he was in his prime, he’d still be with the Red Sox. The Mets got him hoping to catch lightning. So far they have.
Tom Glavine has been giving the Mets more innings wise than Martinez, so I think he’d be better as the Game 1 starter. Remember, the Game 1 starter is chosen with the idea of going twice. If Martinez can’t make it through Game 1, then what makes you think he’d make it through Game 5?
