Mets taking BP right now. Scoreboard is turned on and the Braves are winning 5-3 over Philly in the third.
Very odd in the clubhouse today, asking Willie Randolph and various players how they think they will feel about winning. This is to cover ourselves in the event the Mets don’t clinch tonight, but tomorrow night on their day off if the Phillies lose.
With the Mets flying into Pittsburgh late, we’d have no access to anybody for their reaction.
“I can’t tell you how I’ll feel,” Randolph said. “The neat part is letting it happen.”
He’s right. There’s nothing like the spontaneous display of emotion. It’s odd writing a story that way. There’s nothing wrong with writing a story trying to spin things ahead, but in a case like this where emotions are involved, it seems forced. Rather that focus on emotions, I asked them about the team chemistry and when they realized this could be a special team.
NOTES: Pedro Martinez is on for Friday in Pittsburgh and Randolph said he would start Game 1 of the NLDS if healthy. … Rookie Mike Pelfrey is in town. … Cliff Floyd said his left Achilles is still bothering him. … Carlos Delgado won’t start against lefty Scott Olsen.
