Pitching will determine how deep the Mets go into October, and they have to be encouraged by Tom Glavine’s strong start against the Dodgers—6 1/3 scoreless innings. Glavine struggled for a month, but started to come around before the scare about a possible blood clot.
His start last Friday in Houston was about health; tonight was about sharpness. If he finishes out the month the way he did tonight, he’s got to be a Game 1 starter.
The Mets are talking positive about Pedro Martinez, but considering his fragility, anything they say about him has to be taken with a grain of salt. Even if he’s effective at first, his durability must remain a question.
Given that, assuming John Maine continues to pitch well, one would have to figure the Mets will find a way of getting him on the playoff roster. They might not bump a pitcher for him – it won’t be Steve Trachsel – but add and go with one less position player.

Hey John. Your first season covering the Mets. Having fun yet?
BTW, It would show some balls – and some brains, to leave Trachs off the playoff roster. He doesn’t deserve to start a game, and he’s apparently useless as a reliever. I know, I know, they won’t do it. But they should, and you know it too.
we all know it. But Willie will protect his boys. and the number of wins is TRASH-el’s ammo. sigh
Yeah, I’ve been sighing like that for about a month now whenever I think of Trachs in the playoffs.
Also, just a note… I’m 40 years old, have been a fan for nearly 35 years, spent several years coaching baseball at the HS summer tournament level, and thought I was waaay past this; but for the first time since Doc Gooden, I officially have a “favorite player”. Thanks, Jose Reyes. I’m gonna look pretty silly in the #7 Mets jersey that I think I might have to buy for the playoffs.
#7 – is Kranepool’s number.
i am 42. i was born dodger blue and ny giants orange. actually iwas there for Eddie’s last game. :-(
Reyes is great but i think Endy maybe better. reyes has this cockiness he gets every so often(luckily not like millledge). endy seems more stable. But what I like is the field dynamic. they all are smilin and playin the game.
much better than years before.
as for TRASH-el I said it before, I’ll say it again. He is paying off the fielders to give him multi run leads. its the only explanation.
But also the team captain should be Franco. 48 years old or is it 49. and playing like he’s 30. He’s the man.
AJSMITH …
First year on the Mets beat has been a refreshing change from the Yankees. There are things I miss about the Yankee beat, afterall, I covered them for eight seasons and there was a familiarity there. The Mets are definitely a looser, easier bunch in a lot of ways. And, yes, I am having fun. It has been a good year in many ways.
Now, about Trachsel … I hear you, but I can’t believe they would leave him off. The guy has 14 wins. I know they haven’t been pretty, but somewhere in those games there was a key moment where Trachsel had to make the money pitch and he did.
I like Maine alot, but there are a lot less questions to answer for Willie and Omar if the take the veteran.
Steve C. ...
Trachsel could get four more starts. What if he wins them all in the same fashion he won most of the 14? That’s 18. You’re right … he’s staying. sigh
