Here’s a number I’ll bet nobody thought possible coming out of spring training: The Mets are 20 1/2 games ahead of the Braves after sweeping them out of Shea today, 4-1 and 8-0.
Champions are able to adjust and plug holes over the long season, and the sweep came courtesy of three players not in the organization this spring: Dave Williams, Oliver Perez and Shawn Green.
- Williams, acquired from Cincinnati in May, gave up a run in six innings in his fourth straight solid start.
- Perez, obtained from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline, pitched a five-hit, complete-game shutout.
- Green, picked up in an August waiver deal from Arizona, went 6-for-8 with a homer in each game.
Williams and Perez aren’t expected to make the playoff roster, but give the Mets a solid base heading into next spring.
By the way, the Magic Number is NINE.
