They are saying it is a strained right calf muscle for Pedro Martinez, who gave up six runs in the first inning tonight against the Phillies. It is the second shortest of his career, with the other coming June 20, 1995, when he gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning in a game against Houston while with Montreal.
The Mets are saying Martinez felt something warming up, which only begs the question: You have a 15-game lead, pitching is your concern and one of your keys complains of something, so why does he start the game to begin with? Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a race to the manager’s office to ask Willie why he went ahead with the start.
Stay tuned.
PS: It is 9-0 Phillies in the fourth and Ryan Howard is up.

If Pedro really did feel a twinge warming up, and if Willie knew about it, then starting him is pretty damn close to a firing offense.
Not that that will happen – but time after time this team makes stupid decisions around minor injuries.
AJSMITH …
Willie said he didn’t know before the game, which I find hard to believe. Martinez told Peterson coming in from the pen that he felt tightness, but they Mets are saying Pedro has complained before and pitched well.
Personally, I don’t care. If one of my best pitchers is hurting and I have a 15-game lead, now 14, he doesn’t start if he says anything is wrong. That’s what happens when the inmates run the asylum.
Is there any reason why the Mets are this way with injuries? They waited out Beltran’s injury and wasted time putting Cliff Floyd on the disabled list in June.
Larry, because basically the seasoned players are old.
Not that there is anything wrong with being old, But healing and ijury gets the best of us that try to stay young.
I know that. But that still doesn’t explain them trying to wait out these injuries before putting a guy on the DL. I wouldn’t question it if the younger guys were getting hurt since they heal quicker.
DL is mandatory 15 days no? we are getting close to the end of the season. It could get hairy, and so by waiting they could scout out someone to bring up in case of the inevitable 90 day or season ender.
Plus what if the get better in 2 days?
Just a thought, i hear what u r saying.. BTW i found the following link:
