In covering sports there are times journalists like to separate themselves from the subjects they cover. We will never travel in their social circles, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t appreciated. Several years ago, the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America voted Piazza its “Good Guy Award.” He could have won it every year.
As writers, we were lucky to cover Piazza. As fans, you were lucky to have him play for you these years. He’s special, and someday his plaque will be in Cooperstown, but you already knew that and your cheers told him he was special.
If you have something to say to Mike Piazza or a favorite memory of him, here’s the place to post it.
