Greetings all. I took off the weekend to visit my father in Cleveland. He hasn’t been feeling that well and I needed to see him. We watched the Indians lose three straight to the Tigers by one run. Two on walk-off homers.
The question I posed to you the other day about Wright v. Reyes, well, the Mets answered in an email as I got off the plane. Two more years at twice the money. A lot went into this deal, and power is part of it. Wright has a marketability about him Reyes doesn’t. Remember, chicks dig the longball, and that’s part of it.
Reyes plays shortstop and steals bases. Wright does a little more. He’s a guy people are going to pay to see play even when the team isn’t winning.
This is a huge move by the Mets, and a good one. I’ve been writing this year that Wright and Reyes are the type of cornerstones teams build on, and that they are willing to pay now rather than pay more later is sound business. Especially, moving into their new place in 2009.
I look at the Mets and see in three years a young core of Wright, Reyes and Beltran. I look at the Yankees and see in three years Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in their mid-30s.
