My desk just passed this along about what they are saying on the call-in radio shows, that Jose Reyes is being cheated by the Mets. How can this be?
The Mets are giving a player in his third year, who is 22 years old, a package of $23.25 million. In essence, they gave him free-agent money three years before he would have gone through the process. Yeah, he might have made a little more the first few years had he gone through arbitration, but that’s only conjecture. Remember, in arbitration you’re compared to players at your position and there are no guarantees. What if the ruling went against him?
Also, he’s been hurt in two of his first three years. He gets hurt now, he’s set for life. He gets hurt now without this contract, he’s got his player’s insurance. To suggest the Mets are cheating him is highly irresponsible.
Bad deal? Give me this bad deal.
