This was a stunner.
Less than 24 hours after saying they were encouraged about some aspects of his performance in last night’s 6-5 loss to the Florida Marlins, the Mets optioned Mike Pelfrey to Class AAA Norfolk and replaced him on the roster with lefthander Royce Ring.
“I guess of the guys they are considering, I did the worse of all of them,” said Pelfrey, who gave up for runs on seven hits in six innings last night.
Pelfrey was 2-1 with a 5.48 ERA in four starts. John Maine has thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings over his last three games, and it appears he’ll get the chance as the fifth starter.
Pelfrey’s problem was an inability to throw quality secondary pitches such as a change-up and breaking ball.
Obviously, more to follow.
