The sign posting the itinerary in the Mets’ clubhouse said: Monday—Day off—Enjoy. After completing their sweep of the Braves moments ago with a 10-6 victory, it’s hard to imagine the Mets doing anything but enjoy tomorrow.
There are a lot of numbers and stats that point to a special team, but nothing like this. The Mets have gone over a month without getting a victory from Tom Glavine. Earlier this year they went a month-and-a-half without getting a win from Pedro Martinez. And, later they went a month without getting a start from Martinez.
Contenders collapse when things like that happen. The Mets are now 15 up on the Braves. That says a lot about what’s going on this season.
“More than anything, it means we are a team,’’ Willie Randolph said. “Guys are picking each other up and feel a part of what’s going on.’’
Randolph didn’t say it, but he could have. This isn’t just a team … but it has the makings of being a special team.
