“There is a sense of relief,” Pedro Martinez said. “For me and for the team.”
After giving up four runs in the first inning, one wouldn’t have given much hope of Martinez facing five more hitters let alone lasting five more innings. However, he settled down from throwing 24 pitches in the first to 77 overall.
He gave up just one hit the rest of the way.
The Mets will keep talking until Monday, but how Martinez finished definitely lessened any sense of urgency GM Omar Minaya might have had to pull the trigger on a deal. If this season turns out the way the Mets hope, an important chapter was written tonight.
