A little late in the day to be saying hello, I know. Spent most of the day sleeping. Sore throat and stomach virus. No, no … it wasn’t because of how the Mets have been playing. I did manage to catch a couple of innings on TV.
There are a couple of pending developments I’d like to weigh in on:
The first is the possibility of putting Pedro Martinez on the shelf until the second half, which I wrote about the other day. I’m all for it. Let him rest and recover fully. When it comes to injuries, especially with pitchers, it is best to react on the side of caution.
The second is bringing up Mike Pelfrey to start one of the games of Saturday’s doubleheader. Do it! Do it! I’d even pick him up at the airport. The Mets have been saying they don’t want to rush him, but a spot start in July wouldn’t do any harm. The Mets have pitching problems and maybe they might be forced to rely on Pelfrey down the stretch. It is better to get a sample of what he can do now rather than wait until the pressure of September.
