I asked the question a half dozen different ways, but everybody with the Mets insisted Pedro Martinez’s emotions wouldn’t get the better of him tonight. Well, if it wasn’t emotions or nerves, it had to be lousy pitching.
In three innings, Martinez gave up eight runs on seven hits. It was the most runs he has allowed in a start since the Yankees got him for eight two years ago. It was his shortest start of the season.
There are a couple of ways to look at tonight.
One, this was just an emotional blowout, something to be discarded like a bad poker hand. Two, is Martinez has won only twice in his last 11 games, with the Mets losing seven of them. Looked in that light, then there’s cause to be alarmed. Martinez’s dry run has been overlooked because the Mets have kept winning.
We now have to wonder whether Martinez is hurt. He said he’s healthy enough to get by, but maybe he isn’t. Something isn’t right.
