Greetings from Toronto, which for me has always been one of my favorite stops on the tour. This is a clean town, a fun town with plenty to do and places to eat, and today is the start of the Toronto Jazz Festival. Later in the summer there will be a movie festival. I’ve been here before with the Yankees and Orioles and have been to both.
This is a great city to walk around in. Lots of music/video and bookstores. There’s a theater behind the hotel where I stay, and the next street over is a restaurant where they play live jazz. I told Bernie Williams about it a couple of years ago and he said he’d check it out. Not far from that is the hockey Hall of Fame.
Not far from the park there’s a bar/restaurant near the park called “Fred’s Not Here,’’ which makes me laugh every time I pass.
SkyDome, however, is deteriorating. They call it Rogers Centre now, but the Canadian communications giant isn’t pumping any money into the place. When I first started coming here the Blue Jays were getting almost four million a year. Tonight, I’m willing to bet there might be as many as a dozen empty sections.
If you ever get a chance, this is a place for a great weekend getaway.
