We were waiting around David Wright’s locker after the game. Wright is usually there, but this time he was late. “He’s big-timing us,’’ somebody said.
No way. Not at all.
In fact, Wright’s delay had a purpose. We were going to talk with Tom Glavine anyway, but now we had time to talk with Eli Marrero, who made a great catch. Aaron Heilman, who had been getting ripped lately, but threw a perfect ninth. Reliever Chad Bradford, who never lets any inherited runners score. And, Ramon Castro, who got to catch and hit a homer.
Wright is a star who is only going to get better, but what he did was enable some of his teammates get some attention after beating Baltimore, 9-4, this afternoon. He gets it.
And, those M-V-P chants? Premature, yes, but not misplaced. He’s as valuable as they come to the Mets.
