With the off day Monday, us beat guys wrote a status report on the team. Winning six of seven out West, the reviews were good. Willie Randolph was amused, but wasn’t biting on the Mets being the only show in town.
“I think it’s comical,” he said. “It’s New York. It’s sensationalism. That’s what sells. It makes Mets fans feel good. It means we’re being noticed.”
Randolph said he spends a lot of time in NYC and fans come up all the time to thank him.
“I tell them, `For what?’ We haven’t done anything, yet.”
He’s right. Teams have lost a lot bigger leads than the 6.5-game one they have on the Phillies. But, it’s Randolph’s job to be the ants on the euphoria picnic. Even so, there’s a lot to like about this team right now, with perhaps the best thing is that when talking to the players about how well things are going they dismiss it and say there’s work to do.
In a word, these guys are hungry.
