It’s not true that sportswriters never have a rooting interest. We all pull for good storylines and fast games. Orlando Hernandez gave us both tonight.
The Hernandez game I’ll always remember was Game 4 of the 1998 ALCS at Cleveland. I was having lunch in the hotel restaurant when in popped Hernandez as if he didn’t have a care in the world. He was jovial and joked with anybody who approached him.
I had a feeling about that night and he was superb. It the Yankees had lost they would have gone down 3-to-1 in the series. With Game 5 in Cleveland there was a good chance the series could have ended the next night.
He was that way again last night.
