Depending on how Willie Randolph juggles his rotation to account for off days and rainouts, not to mention the order coming out of the All-Star break, Tom Glavine could get as many as 22 more starts _ including tonight against the Giants.
Which leads us to the question …
“I’m not comfortable talking about it,’’ Glavine said about 300 victories.
He’s 17 shy, but is on the kind of roll that makes you think it’s possible. He’s on a 6-0 run with a 2.27 ERA, as good a streak as he’s ever had, and is going for seven straight tonight.
Glavine’s resurgence is a lesson to us all. For much of his career he relied on his fastball and change-up on the outside corner, but now he’s challenging hitters more inside, and doing it with breaking balls.
New tricks for this old dog. Watch him closely tonight. He’ll use both sides; go up and down in the zone. The man is an artist, and I, for one, am not ruling out 300 this year.
