Got an email today from a writer friend in Detroit, wanting to know Cliff Floyd’s availability and being a possible fit with the Tigers. Supposedly, Detroit has minor league pitching it can part with and needs a left-handed bat in the outfield.
The Mets are saying no, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen later. This is an intriguing possibility and something that bears watching as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.
Floyd is in the final year of his contract, and the hope is Lastings Milledge could develop enough this year to move into left next spring. Xavier Nady’s appendectomy changed that, and if the Mets get a good feeling about Milledge over the next few weeks it could grease the skids for a deal.
However, the Mets need to see more of Milledge before swinging a deal with Floyd because of their aspirations for this year.
