I had the night off, but couldn’t pull myself from the TV and one of the classic games of the season. It doesn’t get any better than 1-0 in 13 innings.
I’ve always loved pitcher’s duels and Pedro Martinez and Brandon Webb was too good to resist. Pedro was terrific, and one of these games they’ll get him some runs. Eight scoreless. The guy still has it.
But there was so much more than Pedro that says this could be a special year.
Jose Valentin made a backhand, diving catch in the second that saved a run, and subsequently the game. Then he doubled to lead off the 13th and advanced on a slow roller to short. (Actually, I thought Willie Randolph was going to bunt with Tom Glavine there).
Carlos Delgado is in a miserable slump, but a guy like Endy Chavez came off the bench to deliver the game-winner. … Lastings Milledge made an error, but redeemed himself with a great throw. … The bullpen was super again.
There are numbers that also say a lot: eight walk-off wins; five victories in extra innings; and 16 one-run wins.
“I believe the tighter it gets the more we’re going to win,” Martinez said.
They all believe it, which is the attitude that wins championships.
