After Sunday’s game in Milwaukee, Pedro Martinez said the Mets are being tested on this trip. Their biggest starts tonight in St. Louis.
The Cardinals are the team to beat in the National League, and whatever October aspirations the Mets have entail going through St. Louis first. For their season to play out the way they want, they must come back here again.
Tom Glavine against Jeff Suppan tonight. Steve Trachsel tomorrow and no decision yet on Thursday. We should get that today.
Brian Bannister could be activated from the disabled list, but if there’s any doubt about his hamstring they should push him back. It’s way too early and a re-injury could shelve him another month. Better wait and have no regrets.
Ironically, the lack of great options is the greatest argument for caution.
The other choices are between Jeremi Gonzalez and Jose Lima. Neither provides a great feeling of confidence, but Gonzalez is coming off the better game.
Let’s face it, neither would be here if not for injuries. And, if Bannister is forced and hurt, then both will likely stay in the rotation.
Wait on Bannister and risk taking your lumps Thursday.
