Opting to play the caution card the Mets decided today to keep Brian Bannister on the disabled list rather than rush him back against St. Louis or the Yankees.
Bannister will throw in the bullpen Thursday and then make a rehab start for Class AAA Norfolk over the weekend.
Mets manager Willie Randolph said a second rehab start isn’t out of the question.
The Mets will give Thursday’s start against St. Louis to Jose Lima and start Jeremi Gonzalez Friday against the Yankees at Shea
Stadium. In doing so, this would give Pedro Martinez an extra day of rest. He’ll start Saturday with Tom Glavine going Sunday against the Yankees.
The Mets are looking for ways to get Martinez extra rest, and yesterday’s day off made that opportunity possible.
