Pssst. The Mets are also playing tonight. With Yankees-Red Sox it is easy to forget, but they are in for three with Philly.
Pitching match-ups favor the Mets all three games, but Phillies are red hot, so any such advantage could be neutralized.
While everybody is talking about their eight-game lead on the Braves, they are only up four on the Phillies, which means they’ll be up only by a game if they are swept. So, even if it is only May, there is some degree of importance to this series. Never underestimate maintaining karma.
Some random thoughts on the Mets …
Bad idea on the hair for Jose Lima. If you’re an average player at best, keep as low a profile as possible. He, and Jeremi Gonzalez when he gets here, shouldn’t say a peep. Just pitch.
I think it is safe to say Carlos Beltran’s anxiousness about playing in New York has subsided. However, before saying he’ll hit 35 homers, remember his career high is only 29. Beltran is a good, solid player, but he’s not a superstar.
Key stat: Remember how Jose Reyes was walking about being more patient at the plate? He had 27 walks last year, and is already up to 14 this season. Big improvement.
Look for the Mets to bring up pitcher Heath Bell before tonight’s game and send down Bartolome Fortunato.
The back end of the Mets rotation looks bad, but it’s way too early to panic and think about trading Lastings Milledge for Barry Zito. I’m not so sure I’d do that in July, either. Zito hasn’t been Zito for awhile and he’s a free-agent. To get him the Mets have to lock him up, and I’m not so sure they wouldn’t be overpaying with Milledge at this stage of their respective careers. Dontrelle Willis? Maybe. Not Zito.
They’ll boo Billy Wagner tonight. Why not? I’ve covered Eagles games here. Never mind booing Santa Claus, they’ve booed the cheerleaders.
