People, people … give the guy a break.
Something keeps sticking out for me about Opening Day.
It wasn’t Tom Glavine, although I’m going to enjoy watching him pitch the same way I did Mike Mussina and Roger Clemens. I have always admired artists. It wasn’t the Paul Lo Duca sleight-of-hand play at the plate.
What sticks out is how Carlos Beltran was booed. Unfairly booed. Cruelly booed.
C’mon … give it a rest.
So what if he went 0-for-4. It happens, and it happens to players a lot better than Beltran.
It’s because of the $119-million contract and his miserable first year at Shea, but we’re one game into a new season. There’s going to be more 0-for-4 games, but he’s too good a player not to produce.
Boo Beltran if he dogs it, but not for one hitless afternoon. Here’s something to chew on. If he were sulking, he never would have hustled to make that throw to end the game.
Here is another: In spring training he took unfair heat because he had the audacity to bunt in the first inning. Here’s a guy executing a selfless play, which too few players are interesting in doing, and he’s ripped.
Not right.
