Opening Day thriller …
Great game. Crisp and well played. The Mets came away a 3-2 Opening Day winner today over Washington.
Xavier Nady got four hits. Tom Glavine was sharp. Paul Lo Duca stole a run at the plate.
However, Opening Day 2006 will best be remembered for the roar that accompanied Billy Wagner from the bullpen to start the ninth. Exciting stuff.
After all, Wagner is the essence of what the Mets’ winter shopping was all about and he came through.
“I was so nervous I couldn’t enjoy the moment,” Wagner said. “It made me remember the first time I pitched in the big leagues. I felt like I was running on clouds. I don’t know how I got to the bullpen to the mound.”
Wagner’s save gets the season off on a good note, but how long it is remembered will be determined by what happens the rest of the summer.
However, for now it is a nice Opening Day moment.
